Application of physical therapy in the management of muscle tension dysphonia and other voice and swallowing disorders. The course covers the rationale of the treatment by covering functional anatomy and physiology of voice production, laryngeal examination for muscle tension using the Lieberman protocol. A chapter of advanced vocal fold examination and bed side diagnosis will be given by Prof. Markus Hess.

The course is aimed at SLT, ENT laryngologists, physiotherapists and other therapists who are interested in diagnosis and referral criteria to voice specialists who use manual techniques. Summary of functional anatomy and physiology, safety when applying Laryngeal Manipulation. Specific basic techniques, head and neck, jaw, TMJ function, suprahyoid muscles, middle constrictor, thyro-hyoid mechanism, crico-thyroid joint articulation, inferior strap muscle, breathing apparatus.

Techniques will be demonstrated, then practiced by participants under close supervision. Some psychological aspects of voice problems will be discussed. The course is aimed at practitioners with mixed skills in treating voice problems. Those with experience in palpation will be shown more advanced techniques. Attendance on previous courses is not mandatory but can be advantageous. The final aim of the course is to provide additional tools for diagnosis and treatment of tight laryngeal muscles and joints.
