A competency based 3 bone training manual has been devised so that trainees can complete 10-12 dissections on each temporal bone in a self-paced, structured manner under direct supervision of otological trainers.

The programme includes surgical anatomical training in myringoplasty, ossiculoplasty, tympanoplasty, stapedectomy, attico-antrostomy, mastoidectomy, labyrinthectomy, internal auditory canal exploration, endolymphathic sac decompression, facial nerve decompression and jugular fossa exploration.

The SAC recommends that each surgical trainee attends at least 2 training days per year, but it is hoped that trainees will attend 2-4 days. Trainees from out with Scotland must book and pay for 3 courses in advance. This should be sufficient time to work through one bone in the manual, however it is possible to book an extra day to finish work on this bone if required. The aim of this is to reduce bone wastage.

The course provides

  • instruction in the use of microscopes and ENT surgical instrumentation
  • “hands on” practical anatomical and surgical skills experience using cadaveric temporal bone specimens
  • personal tuition from experienced otologists
  • evidence of skills training and competency
