Tumors of the Nose, Sinuses and Nasopharynx

This is an excellent book that presents an impressive amount of valuable information on tumours of the nose, sinuses and nasopharynx. The authors are highly respected in their field with vast combined experience.

The book is well structured. The introductory chapter gives detailed information on the history and evolution of surgery of the maxilla, paranasal sinuses and skull base. The format of the chapters is excellent. Each individual chapter starts with definitions, synonyms and diagnostic strategies, including clinical, imaging and histological strategies. This is followed by treatments and complications, and ends with citations from literature for further reference.

The book is divided into 2 sections, comprising a total of 26 chapters over 596 pages of text. Colour is utilised in the tables, figures, diagrams and line drawings, which are used to good effect in illustrating important points, concepts and research.

The section on surgical techniques is very instructive, with good quality pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative pictures. Coloured drawings are also used on occasion to describe some surgical procedures. The techniques of an endoscopic approach, external approach and combined transfacial-intracranial open approach are described in detail. Each approach is supplemented with key points from the authors’ experiences.

Section II is dedicated to the nasopharynx, and describes the management of benign and malignant pathology. The chapter on nasopharyngeal carcinoma management in particular provides a very valuable description of the treatment strategies based on current evidence.

Overall, this is an excellent book. It gives clear and concise, up-to-date text, with extensive detail on tumours of the nose, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx. Certainly, I would recommend this book, especially for registrars and fellows with a special interest in endoscopy and the anterior skull base, for head and neck oncologists, and for consultants in otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery.
